How a company gets on this list

  1. 1

    Start from the public record

Every listing begins as a company's own Google Business record in Illinois.

  2. 2

    Keep the real ones

Open companies with at least one Google review and kitchen work stay. Duplicates are merged.

  3. 3

    Read their website

We read each company's own site for the services it says it offers.

  4. 4

Say when we do not know

If the website does not say, the listing says so. We never guess.

No company pays to be listed, and no company can pay to change its rating or its place in the ranked list. Paid spots exist, and every one is labeled Sponsored on the card.

Nothing on a listing counts as checked unless it carries the Verified mark. Ratings are Google's, with the date we read them. Services come from each company's own website.

Owners can claim a listing to correct details or add their own photos. A person checks every claim. How listings are compiled.

Before you hire a kitchen remodeler in Illinois

How to use this directory

Start with the service you need. Some companies do full kitchen remodels. Others do one part of a kitchen, such as countertops, cabinets or tile, and are marked Specialist. Pick a service in the search box and the list narrows to companies whose own websites say they do that work.

Then find your town. Every town page lists its companies with the Google rating, the review count and the date we checked. Chicago has an area filter for the North Side, Northwest Side, West Side, South Side and Downtown. The county pages for Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, Kane, McHenry and Kendall bring together the towns in each county, which helps when your own town has few companies.

Choose up to 3 companies to compare them side by side, then call the ones you like directly. Nobody sells your number.

What to check before you hire

A written contract. The Illinois Home Repair and Remodeling Act (815 ILCS 513) covers kitchen remodels. For work over $1,000 the company must give you a written contract to sign before work starts. It states the total cost, with parts and materials listed, and the company's business name and address. You must also get the state pamphlet, Home Repair: Know Your Consumer Rights. Never sign a contract with blank spaces. Contracts and lien waivers has the detail.

Insurance. The Act requires contractors to carry liability and property damage insurance unless their net worth is at least $1,000,000. Ask for proof. The Attorney General lists a refusal to show it as a warning sign.

Local licensing. Illinois has no statewide general contractor license. Chicago licenses general contractors and has an online lookup. Other cities and villages ask for permits or registration instead, and plumbers are licensed by the state.

Permits. Permits are local. Chicago says cabinets and countertops alone need no building permit when there are no plumbing or electrical connections. Other cities differ, and some do not say, so ask your building department. See permits, city by city.

Lien waivers. Before you pay, ask for the sworn statement of who supplied labor and materials. The state pamphlet also advises getting lien waivers from contractors and subcontractors if appropriate. Ask a lawyer about the details.

Lead-safe work. For homes built before 1978, EPA rules require paid remodelers who disturb painted surfaces to be certified in lead-safe work practices, with a small-job exception. Ask before you sign.

What kitchens cost

Figures are estimates from published industry surveys (Zonda's 2025 Cost vs. Value report and the 2026 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study), not quotes. Your price depends on size, scope and finishes. The Zonda 2025 report prices model projects of a 200-square-foot kitchen with 30 linear feet of cabinets. For Chicago it estimates $27,187 for a minor midrange remodel and $84,237 for a major midrange one. The Houzz 2026 study reports national median spend in 2025 of $20,000 for a minor remodel and $55,000 for a major one, among Houzz users who finished. Kitchen remodel cost in Illinois shows all of the figures.

Frequently asked questions

How are kitchen remodelers listed here?

Every listing starts from the company's public Google Business record. We keep companies that are open, have at least one Google review and do kitchen work. Then we read each company's own website and mark which services it says it offers. When the website does not say, the listing says so instead of guessing.

Do companies pay to be listed?

No. A basic listing is free and stays free. Companies can ask about a sponsored spot on a town page. There are at most 3 per city, every sponsored card is labeled Sponsored, and a sponsored card never sits above the first unpaid listing.

Do you check licenses or insurance?

No. Nothing on a listing is verified unless it is marked Verified, and Verified only means we checked that the company's email domain matches its website and its phone matches the listing. Illinois has no statewide general contractor license, so rules depend on where the work is. Check local licensing with your city or village, for example the City of Chicago, and ask for a certificate of insurance before you sign.

What does Specialist mean on a card?

A Specialist focuses on one part of a kitchen, such as countertops, cabinets, cabinet refinishing or tile, instead of whole kitchen remodels. Specialists are listed at the bottom of a town page, below the kitchen remodelers and the other companies that do kitchen work.

What are the other companies that do kitchen work?

They are companies in other trades, showrooms, interior designers and bath specialists that are not kitchen remodelers first, but whose listing or own website shows kitchen work. They are listed below the kitchen remodelers on a town page.

My company is listed and something is wrong. How do I fix it?
